Julie has been invited to attend a Carnival Seminar in Liverpool on 19th March which is hosted by The Arts Council of England. The seminar is ‘aiming for an informed and business-ready sector’ and states “The next five years offer once-in-a-lifetime opportunities for the carnival sector across England.”
It will be a great chance to catch up with colleagues from other carnival organisations, and one of the speakers is Henrique da Silva, whom Julie met when in Rio in 2005. Henrique is now President of Paraiso School of Samba, winner of the Notting Hill Carnival ‘Band on the Road’ competition.

Workington Carnival,
Barracudas are performing at Workington’s “Paint the Town Red” Festival on Saturday 30th August. Not only are we taking part in the Cavalcade, but also setting up so people can try out stilt walking, costumes and drumming for themselves. Come and visit us outside Laura Ashley.

Last week we had our second youth meeting, which was very productive indeed! We have decided to apply for funding from the Youth Opportunity Fund in order for the Barracudas teenagers to get involved with planning their own music, dance, stilt-walking, carnival make-up and costume-making workshops. The chosen name of this group of young Barracudas is ‘Barracudas’ Rising Stars’.
We also talked about how to get more people to join our band, and the ways that we discussed were visiting schools, arranging open evenings and advertising in local press. We also believe that a good way is to talk to people. So spread the word!
One person also suggested that we should get Barracudas T-shirts printed, which we all thought sounded like a great idea, and we are currently looking into it.

Barracudas Carnival Band was originally founded in 1988, which means that we will be celebrating our 20th anniversary this year! Julie and Caroline are currently working on numerous funding applications, and we hope to make 2008 a very special year, with a full programme of workshops, activities and fantastic carnival!
